A room that changes its seating needs light that does not change with it.
A banquet hall lives in two states. In one it is empty and formal: guests come in, and what works first is the volume — the height, the depth, what is visible from the doors. In the other it is filled with tables, and the light is needed not in the volume but over the cloth, the faces and the settings.
A composition usually answers for the first state, and that frees it from an impossible task. The tables have their own group of light, set out with the seating and changed along with it. A composition is sized by the volume of the room, not by the number of covers, and its position is not tied to the tables: the tables will be moved.
Two circuits of light, not one
The composition carries the volume and the occasion; the tables have a separate group that changes with the seating. The total power of the composition is known before the order and does not enter the calculation of light levels at the tables.
The composition is not tied to the tables
Seating changes from one event to the next; the composition does not. Its centre is aligned with the geometric centre of the room or the axis of the entrance, not with the centre of a table.
The mounting plate goes in before the finishes
The slab is almost always concealed by a suspended ceiling, and the fixing goes to the structural slab only — nothing fixes to the lining. After the finishes this becomes an opening-up, not an installation.
