Lighting composition
LC0406
A composition about a staircase of light. The arcs twist into a spiral from top to bottom, and on each hangs a dense fringe of faceted rods. The form quotes a spiral staircase outright: turns, treads, ascending movement.
The light is woven into the arcs rather than hung from them: the structure itself burns.
By day it is a gold spiral with a clear fringe — a piece read through its turns and the highlights on the facets, alive as you walk around it. In the evening every turn lights from within, the fringe breaks the light into sparks, and the spiral becomes a staircase leading up. Movement seen from below and from every floor differently.
Where it works
Formal verticals — atriums, stairwells several floors high, shafts between levels. The spiral reads whole only at full height: cropped, it loses its point.
Style
Art Deco and formal classicism: the spiral as a symbol of ascent. The message is ceremonial — a piece for a building rather than for a room.
The height, the number of turns and the density of the fringe are all made to order.
