A composition about rain. Fine rods of varying length, each with a large drop at its end, stand in a dense array — you see through them as through a downpour. Hundreds of elements almost touching: the composition does not depict rain, it reproduces it.

The top is level, the centre deeply sagging — the silhouette is funnel-like, as though the mass were drawn down by its own weight. The drops are elongated and heavy, with a perfectly smooth surface: the shape water takes as it falls.

By day it is pure hatching — vertical lines read graphically, almost a technical drawing. In the evening the rod works as a lightguide: it stays almost invisible while the drop at its end flares. The composition becomes a volume filled with hanging luminous points at varied depths — a downpour with its movement taken away.

Where it works

Generous volumes — atria, lobbies, stairwells, double-height living rooms, banquet halls. The depth of the array needs height: in a low room the funnel does not read.

Style

Contemporary classicism and minimalism: the vertical instead of ornament. The message is ceremonial and austere — a piece for a formal space without excess.
