A composition about a night sky. Large stars of the first magnitude, a fine gold scattering between them, thinned edges and a dense core — the distribution is taken from a real sky, where the bright is always scarce and the small is plentiful.

The four-pointed elements with sharp, slightly curved rays are each turned their own way: not one repeats the orientation of its neighbour. The swarm is alive.

By day it is a clear scattering with gold sparks — a piece read through contours and highlights, almost without colour. In the evening the light flares at the tips of the rays and dissolves into the mass, and the composition becomes a patch of sky carried up to the ceiling. A minimal and ceremonial register.

Where it works

Formal spaces — lobbies, atriums, banqueting halls, double-height living rooms. A night sky reads against a dark ground: on a white ceiling the effect is lost.

Style

Contemporary classic and minimalism: the star as the purest of signs. The message is ceremonial — a piece for a space that has to impress.
