A composition about movement in a circle. The shoal runs in a closed loop around an empty centre — and that emptiness is the point: the fish are circling around something that is not there. The device comes from the behaviour of real shoals, which gather into a torus when they defend themselves.

The ring is not flat: on one stretch the shoal rises, on another it drops, and the loop turns out to be twisted through space. Density is uneven — in places the fish move in a wall, elsewhere they break away alone.

By day it is graphics on the ceiling: narrow forked-tail silhouettes, clear mixed with gold, read through outline. In the evening the level of light shifts around the circle — one arc burns bright, the opposite one is nearly in shadow: the clear bodies give white flares along their rims, the gold ones light up whole. A shoal circling an invisible centre.

Where it works

Generous rooms — lobbies, atria, double-height living rooms, pools and spas. The ring reads only from above at a distance: it needs volume, not a ceiling close overhead.

Style

Marine modernism and contemporary sculptural installation. The message is narrative — a piece that tells a story rather than decorating.
