Decorative composition

LC0092

A composition about a dismantled stained-glass window. Every feather is assembled from separate coloured segments joined by silver soldering, and the seams form the pattern of the vane: they work as veins and as frame at once. Structure and drawing are one and the same thing here.

The feathers are turned in different directions and hang at varied levels; the main mass gathers at the centre, and below individual feathers break away and fall alone.

By day it is a flock of blue feathers — from cobalt and ultramarine to turquoise, read through colour against the light. In the evening the light passes through the segments and each fills with its own tone — blue beside turquoise, ultramarine beside near-black — while the silver seams flare as a graphic net over the colour. The pattern reads more clearly than by day: a stained-glass window taken apart and suspended in the air.

Where it works

Generous rooms — lobbies, atria, double-height living rooms, spas and pools, gallery spaces. The technique is made to be seen against the light: the piece is placed where people look up at it.

Style

Art Nouveau and the Tiffany stained-glass tradition in a contemporary reading. The message is collector-minded — a piece for an interior that values handwork.

The overall size, the number of feathers, the palette of the segments and the pattern of the soldering are all made to order.
