Lighting composition
LC0093
A composition about fragility in quantity. One butterfly is a detail; a hundred butterflies are an event. The author uses that: the mass is denser below and at the centre, while at the edges individuals fly far off alone — and it is they that make the flock alive.
The wing form differs by species — some broad, some narrow with long tails; the veins are drawn. The figures are turned in different directions, some hanging flat, some edgewise.
By day it is a flock stilled below the ceiling — white, matte, faintly translucent, read through silhouette. In the evening the light passes through the thin wings and they begin to glow from within in a soft milky tone with the veins showing through. Not a single hard highlight: the glow reads as a property of the butterflies themselves, not as backlighting.
Where it works
Generous rooms — lobbies, double-height living rooms, winter gardens, wedding and banquet halls, children's spaces. Soft diffuse light suits zones where people spend time.
Style
Art Nouveau and romantic classicism: the butterfly as a classic motif of fragility. The message is light and bright — a piece for a space that wants to give pleasure.
The overall size, the number of figures, the range of wing forms and the tone of the glow are all made to order.
