A composition about a split mineral. The facets meet at random angles, without symmetry — the way a stone looks when it has been broken rather than cut. The author deliberately refuses jewellers' regularity: what is valued here is the rock, not the workmanship.

The crystals hang at varied levels, bunching into a dense mass in places and falling away alone, far down or to the side, in others. The depth of colour depends on thickness: the more massive, the more saturated.

By day it is a scatter of minerals in the air — turquoise with a greenish cast, read through volume and refraction. In the evening the light enters the body and refracts on every facet, filling the colour from within: in the thick passages it deepens to emerald, in the thin ones it lightens almost to clear. Not one source is visible directly — a vein lit from inside the rock.

Where it works

Generous rooms — lobbies, atria, spas and pools, double-height living rooms. Saturated colour needs a neutral setting.
