A composition about a colony. The sea anemone is a creature that does not move and does not look alive until it starts to glow. The author takes that form: a rounded body with a grainy core and dozens of tentacles radiating in every direction. Each is drawn out its own way and curved separately — there are no identical elements.

The composition is vertical, wound into a spiral. Some anemones break away from the mass and hang alone, with gaps between them: the colony looks grown rather than assembled.

By day the object is all but invisible — entirely clear, it shows itself only in highlights, a gathering of transparent creatures easy to overlook. In the evening the light enters the base of each tentacle and travels to its tip, flaring there as a point. From below the composition reads as a swarm of glowing stars with radiating rays — a colony lit in the depths.

Where it works

A vertical format — stairwells, atria, double-height living rooms, spas. Transparency needs a dark backdrop: against a pale wall the colony is lost by day and by night alike.

Style

Marine modernism and scientific aesthetics: a biological form reproduced precisely. The message is investigative — a piece for someone who loves nature unstylised.

The overall height, the number of elements, the length of the tentacles and the density of the colony are all made to order.
