A composition about hatching. Short clear rods hang horizontally, the rows running in tiers, curving as they rise and fall. Hundreds of lines oriented one way and layered over each other give the effect of pencil hatching — a volume built out of separate strokes.

Density is uneven: in places the strokes bunch into tight packs, elsewhere they hang alone far from the mass. That is how a hand hatches, not a machine.

By day the composition is all but invisible — the colourless rods read only through highlights, and the drawing in the air is barely guessed at. In the evening the light enters a rod at one end and travels its whole length, so every stroke lights up as an even line. What remains is a drawing suspended in the air — a sketch made in light.

Where it works

Generous rooms — lobbies, atria, double-height living rooms, stairwells, meeting rooms. Transparency needs a dark backdrop: against a white ceiling the piece disappears by day.

Style

Contemporary minimalism and the graphic school: the line as the only element. The message is intellectual — a piece for an interior that rests on an idea.
