A composition about a whirlpool. Faceted plates of differing length descend in a spiral cascade along a frame — a vortex twisted from ceiling to floor. The spiral leads the eye downward and does not let go.
The light is woven into the spiral: the points hide between the prisms rather than hanging separately.
By day it is a gold frame with clear faceted pendants — a piece read through its twist and the highlights on the facets, alive as you walk around it. In the evening the whole whirlpool glitters with cold fire: the light breaks up in the facets and is passed from level to level, and the spiral begins to turn before your eyes.
Where it works
Staircases and double-height halls. The spiral is designed for a specific height and reads differently from every floor.
Style
Art Deco and formal classicism: the vortex as a formal motif. The message is ceremonial — a piece for a vertical that has to impress.
The height of the spiral, the number of prisms and the direction of the twist are all made to order.
