A composition about lace. Openwork discs with honeycomb perforation read as a frost pattern or a hand-made doily — but are executed with machine precision. Joining airiness to precision is the device: a cloud from a distance, a jeweller's work up close.

At the centres of the discs, flowers open with light in them; the bowl is wide, the discs white intermixed with gold.

By day it is a field of lace: the perforation reads as graphic work, light from the window passes through it and draws a second composition on the ceiling. In the evening the light leaves through the perforation as hundreds of highlights — a small cloud of points appears around every bowl, and the lace turns out to be glowing.

Where it works

Living rooms, dining rooms, boudoirs, wedding halls, boutiques. The perforation gives patterned shadows — quiet surfaces are needed nearby so the drawing can be seen.

Style

Art Nouveau and jewelled Art Nouveau: lace as a classic decorative motif. The message is dressy and feminine — a piece for an interior that loves detail.
