A spiral as a way of leading the eye. The elements turn around a shared axis and the gaze travels them from top to bottom as it would travel steps — the composition sets its own viewing route.

Every wing is lit along its curve, so the light also moves along a spiral. The piece is built so that standing in front of it is awkward: it wants to be walked around, or passed on the way down a staircase.

By day it is a stream of gold petals frozen mid-turn. In the evening it becomes a vortex with every coil alight and the centre left dark, like the throat of a funnel.

Where it works

A vertical format that requires height: stair shafts, atriums, double-height spaces, galleries with a mezzanine.

Style

Art Deco and contemporary luxury: gilding, deep tones, grand staircases, large scale. The message is ascent — the composition turns climbing between floors into a passage through light.
