A composition about the beginning of autumn. Smoky and pale leaves alternate, giving the cloud a depth and a weather that a uniform mass never has: the sky in the first days of autumn looks exactly like this.
Large leaves with the finest vein texture fall as a broad cloud, each on its own cable, each at its own turn. Gold cones at the top read as stalks from which the leaf has only just come away.
By day the texture makes the surface alive: light runs along the veins and every leaf gets a pattern of its own. In the evening the veins light from within — the canopy glows by its veining rather than by its plane.
Where it works
As a cascade in a stairwell or as a broad wave above a long table. The composition is good at full extent: it needs either height or length.
Style
Art Nouveau and natural modern: the leaf as a classic motif. The message is warm and melancholy — a piece for an interior in a natural register.
The number of leaves, the balance of smoky to clear and the shape of the cloud are all made to order.
