Lighting composition
LC0193
A composition about weightlessness. The manta is the only large creature that does not swim but flies: its movement is closer to a bird's gliding than to a fish. The author strips the form of everything surplus and leaves a pure silhouette — a broad triangular wing, drawn-out tips, a curved tail.
The shoal runs in tiers, some rising, some sliding low, the figures turned at random. Glowing points hang between them — plankton, bubbles, suspended matter. It is they, not the figures, that carry the light: on one individual a wing edge flares, on another only a shadow is visible.
By day it is a sculptural shoal below the ceiling — white with occasional dark mirrored accents, graphics on the plane of the ceiling. In the evening immersion sets in: the figures recede into darkness, leaving the luminous suspension and the silhouettes passing through it. The room becomes a body of water.
Where it works
A format for large volumes — atria, lobbies, pools and spas, double-height living rooms, children's spaces. It needs height: the shoal reads only from above, at a distance.
Style
Contemporary sculptural installation, closer to a museum than to an interior piece. The message is narrative — a piece that creates a scene rather than complementing one.
The overall size, the number of figures, the ratio of pale to mirrored and the density of the light points are all made to order.
