A composition about flight. Every plate is bent its own way — origami that has almost sprung open: the form is caught at the moment when the fold no longer holds. Individual figures have broken away from the main stream, and it is exactly those that make the flock alive.

The vortex is vertical: a dense core at the centre, sparse birds at the edges. Three finishes give three temperatures — cold transparency, matte whiteness and warm gold.

By day it is a flock read through folds and overlays: clear, white and gold intermixed. In the evening points of light are dissolved through the flock and lift the folds from within — the form appears through the ribs of the creases, and the flight becomes obvious.

Where it works

Stairwells and double-height spaces where flight can be shown at full height. The vortex is designed for a specific height.

Style

Japanese minimalism and contemporary sculpture: the fold as form, flight as subject. The message is poetic — a piece that tells a story.
