A composition about an armful. The stems spread from a round base outward and downward, each bending its own way: not a bouquet set in a vase but an armful thrown open in every direction. Between them runs a dense fringe of straight rods — what remains of the stems that have no flower.

The cups with their ragged wavy rims are open like a poppy, or like a flower that has just unfurled. The tone is pomegranate-crimson, almost opaque in places, lightening to pink in others.

By day the composition reads as a bouquet — saturated colour on gold, dense and painterly. In the evening the light passes through the body of the colour and the petals fill from within: the tone becomes deeper and hotter than by daylight, while the stems pick up the reflection and glow as fine lines. An armful of embers on gold legs.

Where it works

Living rooms, dining rooms, reception rooms, restaurant floors, boudoirs. The saturated tone needs a calm backdrop: against a coloured wall the flower is lost.

Style
