Light as art

Decorative composition

LC0369

A composition about a shoal going round an obstacle. The shoal moves diagonally, deeper and lower — not as a formation and not as a cloud but as a trajectory: the way large sea creatures pass an obstruction without breaking the group.

Every ray is cast whole: a thick body with a lens inside and a wing edge so fine it is almost a thread. The difference in thickness is the principal device — a dense body against a vanishing edge.

By day the object all but dissolves: only highlights and contours are visible, the shoal guessed at rather than read. In the evening light from the fixing points floods the wing from within — a wave of light runs along the clear body, the tip of the tail flares as a point — and the shoal appears entire, "swimming" slowly as the viewer moves.

Where it works

Long spaces — above a table, along a staircase, in a gallery. The diagonal is designed for a specific volume and a specific point of entry.

Style

Marine Art Nouveau and contemporary installation: movement as subject. The message is narrative — a piece that creates a scene.

The number of figures, the trajectory of the shoal and the spread are all made to order.
