Light as art

Decorative composition

LC0150

A composition about a curtain. The lozenges are strung on fine vertical cords — the construction is closer to a bead curtain than to a wall: it hangs rather than stands. Offsets in both directions break the grid: there is no strict pitch, only rhythm.

Three kinds of lozenge — clear with internal marbling, smoky grey with a frosted texture, and dense amber. Each is faceted irregularly, so the facets catch the light differently and no two points in the field are alike.

By day the outline of whatever is behind the screen is visible through the gaps, but not the detail: the panel divides without cutting off. In the evening light runs down the gold cords and enters the facets at the fixing points — the clear ones give white flares, the smoky ones glow subdued, the amber ones fill with copper and become the brightest points. A curtain of lights hung on threads.

Where it works

Zoning — separating a living room from a kitchen, a screen in a lobby, a partition beside a staircase, a backdrop behind a bar counter, an inset in a window opening. A suspended structure goes where permanent fixing is impossible.

Style

Art Deco and jewellery modernism: faceting, thread, light at a point. The message is dressy — a piece for an interior where the screen should be an event.

The screen dimensions, the number of lozenges, the ratio of the three kinds and the layout pitch are all made to order.
