Decorative composition

LC0151

A composition about dried time. Real fern fronds are sealed inside the plates — a fine silhouette with every pinna drawn, held in the body for good. The device is old and botanical: plants were pressed between pages exactly this way, to keep the form once colour and scent had gone.

Triangular plates are set point down and laid in offset rows — the plane reads as scales or as roof tiling. The impressions are scattered across the field irregularly: a herbarium gathered without system, not an ornament.

By day the screen works as a translucent panel — smoky, almost clear in places, drifting into graphite in others, with internal marbling. The view behind it is subdued but not closed. In the evening light enters at the rim, the plates fill from within, and the ferns emerge as dark silhouettes against a glowing ground. A botanical archive lit from behind.

Where it works

Zoning — separating a living room from a dining room, a screen at an entrance, a panel in a spa, a backdrop behind reception, an inset in a restaurant wall. Translucency gives privacy without a solid wall.

Style

Botanical modernism and Art Nouveau: the plant as the principal subject, transparency as the means of holding it. The message is contemplative — a piece for an interior that loves detail.

The screen dimensions, the number of plates, the selection of botanical inserts and the depth of the smoky tone are all made to order.
