A composition about the time of day. The gradient of the flock reads as the passage of a day: from daylight above to dusk below — from white through dusty rose to deep violet. The flock is not flying, it is darkening.

This is a decorative composition with no light of its own: it works through plasticity, colour and shadow. The matte surface kills highlights nobly, and the gold of the beaks and breasts sets the accents.

By day the gradient reads in full: colour is the piece's principal argument, and daylight shows it more precisely than any lighting. In the evening, under directed light, the matte surface gives deep soft shadows while the gold details flare as points — the flock acquires a volume invisible by day.
