A panel that failed to hold its contents. The central gesture is that the fish do not fit inside the frame: part of the shoal has already crossed the edge and is swimming across the bare wall.

The ground works as a seabed lit through water: the colours run into one another in uneven patches, the surface rough and streaked. Above it the shoal moves diagonally, set on rods of differing height — a flat panel turns out to be three-dimensional.

By day it is a fragment of reef shot close up: texture, relief, a subdued palette. In the evening the ground recedes into darkness and only the silver of the scales remains — night water in which you see nothing but what moves.

Style

Art Nouveau and organic modernism: natural textures, subdued tones, large planes. The message is freedom — a composition about how living things do not stay within the boundaries assigned to them.
