Light as art

LC0186

A composition about recognition. A monstera cannot be mistaken for anything else: the deep splits and through-holes are its signature. The author takes the form almost literally, with the venation drawn, and does not stylise it — because all the force of the image lies in instant recognition.

White leaves alternate with gold ones of the same geometry, turned in different directions and laid in layers into a dense vertical thicket. The lower half is bare stem only: the plant is raised above the floor, as in a shot taken from below.

By day it is a sculpture of a plant — white gloss with gold insets, graphic and flat. In the evening the thicket begins to glow from within: the light emerges through the splits, lights the gold linings of the neighbouring leaves and draws patches on them that have passed through the holes. A tropical noon, folded into a room.

Where it works

Living rooms, winter gardens, spas, reception rooms, restaurant interiors. It suits a corner or a position beside a column, where the thicket reads as silhouette.

Style

Tropical modernism and mid-century: the same botany as in fifties interiors, but without the kitsch. The message is buoyant — a piece for a space that loves greenery and light.

The column height, the number of leaves and the ratio of white to gold are all made to order.
