Wall composition

LC0112

A composition about mercury. Crumpled stones of irregular geometry, each with a pressed-in surface — as though fingers had been drawn across something soft — are covered in unbroken mirrored silver without a single matte area. The object has no appearance of its own: it shows only what is around it.

Stones of varying calibre are laid out in a free circle, denser at the centre and sparser toward the edge. No pattern and no order — a natural distribution, like shingle on a shore.

By day it is a scatter of mercury drops: the mirrored surface catches the light of the room and inverts it in the crumpled folds, so each stone acquires its own complex highlight that shifts at the slightest movement of the viewer. In the evening, under directional light, the composition becomes a gathering of mirrors throwing light across the wall — and the wall comes alive.

Where it works

Feature walls — halls, living rooms, stair landings, reception areas, dressing rooms. The composition depends on its surroundings: it is hung where there is something to reflect.

Style

Contemporary art and minimalism: an object with no image of its own. The message is conceptual — a piece for an interior that values the idea.

The area of the layout, the number of stones, the calibres and the character of the mirrored finish are all made to order.
