A composition about what is inside. The oyster is a thing whose entire value is hidden: a rough layered shell outside, a nacreous layer with speckling and marbling within. The author opens the valves and lays them out on the wall face outward.

Valves of varying calibre lie in a dense circle: large at the centre, small at the edges, all turned differently, so the pale insets face different ways and the composition reads as volumetric.

By day the piece rests on three contrasts: the dark rough shell, the pale smooth core and the fine gold line along the rim. In the evening the backlight emerges from behind the valves and traces the gold rim, while the nacreous insets reflect it softly, without glare. A colony lit from beneath.

Where it works

Feature walls — halls, private living rooms, spas, restaurants, reception areas. The circular layout needs a clear wall: neighbouring objects break the form.
