A composition about an oyster and a pearl. The folds run in coils around an off-centre opening, welling over one another and narrowing toward the middle: this is how a shell grows — no coil repeats the one before it.

The surface is mirrored, so every coil reflects its neighbour and inside the shell a depth of its own appears, independent of the reflection in the dark sphere. The piece turns out to be dimensional twice over.

By day it is a golden gleam with cool blue-green reflections deep in the folds and wear along the crests — the shell lives on the reflections of the room. In the evening a small matte pearl lights up in the lower fold: it gives a soft glow from below and grazes the whole spiral, bringing out the relief. Reflection and shell together pull the eye into a single point.

Where it works

Entrance halls, living rooms, boudoirs, private studies, gallery walls. The asymmetry needs a clear wall — the piece is not hung in a row.

Style

Baroque plasticity in a contemporary reading: movement stopped halfway. The message is dramatic — a piece for an interior that likes strong forms.
