Light as art

Wall sculpture

LC0068

A composition about a mirror that is barely there. The opening is very small and set deep into the frame: almost the entire area is given to relief, and only enough reflective surface remains for a reflection to register. The proportion is inverted — here the frame is the subject and the mirror is secondary.

The relief is built from soft broad folds spiralling toward the centre in uneven coils: they well over one another, break, and lift into a sharp crest in places. Crumpled fabric, a rose, a cabbage leaf — the ambiguity is deliberate.

By day the object works through light and shade rather than reflection: warm bronze with a matte surface, bluish veining in the shadows, bright gold wear on the crests, very little shine. In the evening, under directional light, the folds throw deep shadows and the frame becomes almost a relief sculpture, while the deeply recessed convex plate reads as a look down a tunnel — distant, compressed, barely real.

Where it works

Entrance halls, bedrooms, living rooms, corridors, gallery walls — wherever a sculptural object is wanted rather than a functional mirror. It was never conceived as a working mirror.

Style

Organic modernism and wabi-sabi: a subdued palette, irregularity as a virtue. The message is quiet — a piece for an interior that avoids shine.

The diameter, the depth of the folds, the size of the opening and the finish are all made to order.
