Light as art

Vargov®Design

Floor lamp

LC0198

A composition about light stacked like a wall. Links with an opening at their centre are laid in offset layers — the device is taken from masonry, where strength rests not on mortar but on order. The author pushes it to a paradox: the masonry comes out transparent.

Clear links alternate with mirror-gold ones, and there is no system to the alternation — the column reads as built by hand rather than cast. Gaps remain between the courses: the mass breathes.

By day it is an architectural fragment — a column lifted out of a portico and set down in a room. In the evening the masonry opens from within: light passes through the clear links, flares on their rounded ribs, and is intercepted by the gold ones and thrown outward in warm patches. The wall becomes a sieve of light.

Where it works

A vertical on a slender stem needs a free corner and a view from a distance — living rooms, halls, reception rooms, lounges, showrooms. It works well in pairs flanking an axis: a sofa, a fireplace, an entrance.

Style

Art Deco and contemporary classicism: the same language as the bronze floor lamps of the thirties, but with no ornament — only module and rhythm. The message is architectural: a piece for someone who values structure over decoration.

The column height, the number of links, the ratio of clear to gold and the metal finish are all made to order.
