A composition about a shell enlarged many times over. The form curls in two opposing waves with a deep hollow between them, and close linear hatching runs across the whole surface — annual layers, the grooves on a mollusc valve. Scale turns the familiar into the unfamiliar: what once fit in a palm now fills a corner of a room.

The object gives no light — it is pure sculpture, made for viewing in the round: from every side a different form reads.

By day the colour does the work: from pale pink and cream on the crests to deep coral and near-burgundy in the shadows, with a warmed golden band at the very depth of the fold. The transition is gradual, without boundaries — and it brings out the volume better than any light could. In the evening, under side light, everything becomes a play of folds and shadows: the hatching intensifies, the hollow deepens, and the object reads almost as relief.

Where it works

Halls, gallery spaces, private living rooms, showrooms, spas. Viewing in the round means the object is placed at the centre or on a plinth, not against a wall.

Style

Contemporary sculpture and organic modernism: a natural form at the wrong scale. The message is artistic — a work of art rather than a furnishing.
