The Story of One Element, or Adventures of Italians in Russia
The word “quality” lost its link to geography long ago: technology and expertise have moved beyond the old myths — the story of one glass element proves it.

We live in a world where the word “quality” long ago lost its attachment to any particular country.
Technology, manufacturing and expertise have moved beyond geographical myths, yet the market goes on pretending that nothing has changed.
The flag on the box is still held to matter more than the hands that held the mould.
That the name of a country can stand in for an honest conversation about who really makes an object, where and how.
Vargov®Design has never been about geography.
We are about form, idea and responsibility for the result.
We create elements that are recognised without a signature. That is precisely why someone occasionally tries to rename them, to “translate” them into another cultural register and pass them off as something else.
This story is not about a conflict between countries, nor about an argument between cultures.
It is a story about how today's design market works — a market where authorship often turns into an inconvenient detail and the truth is too blunt for the shop window.
The birth of a form
In the spring of 2022 I created an element that became the basis of the decorative compositions LC0138 and the lighting compositions LC0372.
It was not conceived as a commercial product, not designed to answer a market brief and not adjusted to fit the existing collections.
It was the result of a designer's own search — for form, for proportion, for the way a shape meets light.
One of those rare moments when an element appears not as a task but as the logical continuation of a designer's inner work.
On 23 February 2022 this element was published for the first time on our website and in open public sources — with a recorded date, visual materials and a description.
In a professional environment this is standard practice: not self-promotion, but a way of putting authorship on record. Where authorship is not a claim but a fact.
Up to that point the story was entirely ordinary.
Right up to the moment when the element began to live a life of its own.
First contact
At the end of August 2023 the Vargov®Design production facility in China received an enquiry from an Italian representative who preferred to remain anonymous.
The enquiry concerned the manufacture of several LC0372 lighting compositions.
There was nothing unusual about that.
The industry has long lived with global manufacturing: European brands place their orders in China, Asian factories work with Western designers, and logistics stopped being an argument about quality a long time ago.
We accepted the order and completed it in the shortest possible time — professionally, openly and with no hidden conditions.
On 8 December 2023 a video report on the finished work was published on our YouTube channel (the link is given below).
The story could have ended there.
But, as it turned out later, that was only the prologue.
The discovery
On 13 March 2025, walking through the Casaricca showroom on Rublyovskoye Highway, I was astonished to find, among the Italian furniture and lighting, our own composition — the very one made earlier for the Italian client.
It was that exact composition and those exact LC0372 elements.
The Casaricca manager assured me that this was Italian manufacturing of the highest quality, presented under the brand of the Italian factory Jago.
The showroom was displaying the piece as part of its Italian range, sincerely convinced of its origin.
It is fundamentally important to stress: in this story Casaricca was misled as well.
The showroom acted in good faith, relying on the brand's reputation and on the market's settled trust in the formula “Italian design = Italian quality”.
End clients were misled, and so was the professional community.
An experiment nobody noticed
The most telling moment of this story is almost laboratory-precise.
A composition made at our own Vargov®Design production in China was accepted by the market, without reservation, as Italian.
No one questioned the quality, the material or the level of execution.
No questions arose, no doubts appeared.
In effect the market ran a blind experiment on itself — and failed to notice the substitution.
About those who stay in the shadows
Chinese manufacturers stopped being the periphery of the industry a long time ago.
These are professionals, engineers and craftsmen whose skill shapes the global design market today.
These are factories with a high technological culture, tight tolerances and strong specialists, whose work makes up a substantial part of the world's product design.
We think it wrong to keep these people in the shadows while a beautiful legend is sold in the shop window.
And yet their labour still remains invisible.
The reason is simple: the market would rather sell a myth of origin than the real substance of an object. Geography becomes part of the marketing instead of a fact of production.
As a result, pieces made by Chinese specialists reach the market under European brands — with no mention of their real origin and no acknowledgement of those who, physically and technologically, made the object possible.
About a system, not a single story
This case is not unique — it simply records a systemic problem with precision.
The point is not the nationality of design, nor a comparison between countries.
The point is transparency, respect for authorship and responsibility towards the market.
When a form developed by a particular author and realised at a particular production facility is renamed and repackaged to fit a more convenient geography, it is not only the author who suffers.
Trust suffers — the very foundation of a professional community.
In place of a conclusion
There is one particularly telling moment in this story — almost a joke, were it not such an exact diagnosis of the market.
A composition created in China was accepted without question as “Italian”.
Nobody saw the difference.
And once you strip away the names, the brands and the legends, a simple fact remains:
the difference exists only in our heads.
Perhaps it is time to stop judging objects by the flag
and to start talking about the real hands that make them.
